Day 18: Hwy 1 Takes Us To See An Old Friend

Woah! Less than an hour ago, my mom saw Charlie, a old friend from the Peace Corps, for the first time in more than 30 years! It was really quite emotional. Right now I’m sitting in a hotel in Scotts Valley, CA. Jack and I sent my mom across the street so she could catch up with her friend, without the kids under foot. Unfortunately, Charlie has to work tomorrow, so I may not have any more details until later tomorrow night. I think we’re going to stay in this area an extra day so they can hang out tomorrow night after he gets home from work.
Today we drove up the Pacific Coast on Highway 1. [Insert broken record here.] “It was amazing!” We started in Santa Monica and drove thru Malibu, Santa Barbara, and all those other fancy-schmancy beach towns. We saw lots of agriculture and cattle. Vielka had also told us about this castle along the way. It is called Hearst’s Castle. Apparently, the guy built the castle to showcase all the cool shit he’d collected over the years. He’d fly in friends and folks he met, so they could hang out and have a good time. Sounds like my kind of guy. Unfortunately, tours had already ended for the day by the time we got there so we had to settle for an IMAX movie and photos from afar.
Anyway, back to today’s drive. It was really everything I imagined it would be. The ocean was beautiful and roads winded along the coastline. At times, it felt as if you were going drive off into the ocean. At other times, it felt as if the wind was going to blow the truck off the highway.
You gotta check out today’s photos!
