Day 21: Big Trees and Bears

Today we drove through Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park. We saw two of the largest living trees (and living objects for that matter) in the entire world. General Grant, the world’s 3 largest tree, is estimated to be between 1,800 and 2,000 years old. That means it was a young whippersnapper in approximately year 1. The General Sherman Tree, the largest living thing on earth, is estimated to be between 2,300 and 2,700 years old! The estimated weight of the trunk is 1,385 tons and the diameter at the base is 36.5 feet. My photos don’t capture the monstrous size of these trees. There were lots of trees in the Park that you could walk though. There’s one that you can even drive through!
While we were in the Park, we saw lots of wildlife. We saw a half dozen bears, including a mama bear and her two little cubs as well as a black bear which we watched climb a tree.
