Lula Conrad Hoots Memorial Hospital
Here’s another article from the book. Keep in mind this was published in 1965.
“Yadkin County’s modern, efficient Lula Conrad Hoots Memorial Hospital at Yadkinville has had wide public acceptance since its opening May 7, 1952. A million dollar institution now, it was first constructed as a 30-bed hospital at a total cost of $349,600. The county’s share of this cost was $62,560, but a native of the Forbush community, Zeno D. Hoots of Winston-Salem, donated $40,000 of this amount in honor of his wife, the late Lula Conrad Hoots. Federal and state funds made up the remainder, and it was not necessary to use a $80,000 bond issue voted by the citizens.”
The article continues by saying how the hospital had a great reputation and handled a daily patient load nearly twice the average of most new hospitals in the state. Apparently, during the 1st 15 years, the hospital expanded several times.
“Another new feature was the addition of 33 electric beds which operate at the push of a button.”
Unfortunately, the hospital does not still have that same reputation. In fact, a couple of weeks ago my niece broke her leg playing soccer. They went to this hospital after the incident (on a Saturday morning) and they were told to come back on Monday when a doctor would be there. She ended up going to a hospital in a neighboring county where they x-rayed the leg, confirmed it was broken and put her full leg in a cast.
