The Floppy Mother-load

My external floppy drive came in the mail this week, so this morning I’ve been spending some time going through old floppy disks. I found one disk labeled “Personal Junk” (not to be confused with Personal File which is one of my current Johnny Cash projects at work.)

OMG. I hit the motherload! This one disk contains various high school and early college resumes, letters, essays, and short stories. It took me a minute to even figure out how to open them. They were created with an application called ClarisWorks, which doesn’t even exist anymore.

Anyway, here so highlights that I’ve found so far:
- A 1992 Love Letter - Apparently, when I first learned how to use a computer.
- Letters from Camp - Various high school “What’s Up” type letters
- College Application Requests - You know, back before the Internet, when you had to send letters to receive more information
- A Scholarship Acceptance Reply - Letting NYU that I wanted to accept my scholarship
- My High School Resume - Something I always thought was really impressive. Now it just looks plain.
- Jazz Band Trailer Diagram - Charts that I made to help organize my high school Jazz Band’s trailer. If you didn’t load it evenly, the band couldn’t pull the trailer.

(Yes, I have always been a dork.)

Here’s a snippet of my application to NYU. I am meeting some buds for lunch, so I have to run. Will share more later.

United States vs. Roman Empire
(Personal Statement/Essay Choice B)

Considering the events that have lead to the election of current governmental officials and their decisions, the United States standing in worldly affairs and the frame of mind of the citizens, the general status of the United States concerns me greatly. Throughout time, history has repeated itself, sometimes for the better and others for the worse, yet by studying the past, it is easier to create a future with fewer pitfalls. The challenge is to recognize when events of the past parallel the present and to move to avoid the actions that would inevitably cause disaster, as in the past.

In the study Western Civilizations, the Roman Empire is of great importance, especially emphasizing how such a great empire declined and later fell. Most historians agree that no single problem caused the decline and eventual fall of Rome. Instead, they concede that a combination of political, economic and social problems gradually destroyed the strength of the Roman Empire. In my opinion, these problems relate to the United States so closely that unless future events are altered, then the outcome of the United States will have the same tragic ending as the Roman Empire.

Roman citizens gradually felt less responsibility toward government….

Man, I am a dork.

About Sam Gomez

This is my lil' workshop on the web. I created it to let my friends and family know what's going on with me. It quickly became a place for me to rant about my feelings and publicly humiliate myself - not that I needed yet another medium. Generally, I just share whatever is on my mind (stories, photos, etc.) Read the full about me.
