Hawaii Day #2.1: The Hike Up Diamond Head

Ok, no one is ever going to believe this. If Heidi wasn’t there, even I’d think it was a dream. I woke up at around 5 AM. No alarm, wake-up call, or anything. After thumbing through a few of the guidebooks, we decided that we would hike Diamond Head. Diamond Head is a dormant volcano that’s supposed to have a spectacular view of the sunrise.
We grabbed the GPS and hopped in the rental car. It was still dark and while the GPS seems to know most Hawaiian roads, it didn’t know how to get to Diamond Head. Fortunately, we were headed in the right direction, so we were able to follow the signs. When we got there, it was still dark and the parking lot was virtually empty. Not knowing what to expect, we began our hike up the mountain. We could tell the final destination by the number of camera flashes at the top of the mountain. By the time we reached the top, it was already daylight. We’d passed several people who were already on their way back down.
The view was pretty darn amazing.
