” From this Day Forward…”
Heidi and I will have soon been married two years. When we got married, the local county government gave us a pamphlet along with the marriage license. It was issued by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.
At first, the pamphlet made me laugh. I thought, “Should you really be get married if you need a pamphlet to tell you what to expect?” Then I read though some of the questions, and while Heidi and I had dated 5+ years before we got married, we hadn’t even discussed everything listed.
The other day while packing, I found the pamphlet. I thought I would share an exert.
” From this Day Forward…”
Congratulations! You’ve got the license now and you are ready to tie the knot. It’s one of the most important decisions you’ve made in your life. Take a few minutes and ask each other the following questions. These questions were compiled from suggestions by counselors and others who help people prepare and adjust to married life.
- How much money do we make?
- How much do we owe?
- Who will manage our money?
- How should we spend our money?
- Will the wife/husband work? Will she/he work if we have children?
- How many children do we want? When? How would we feel if unable to have children?
- How would we discipline our children?
- How do we want to raise our children with respect to religion?
- Are there any jobs around the house or yard don’t think we should be asked to do?
- What do we want to do in our spare time after we are married?
- Should we live near our families?
- How will we resolve conflict between us?
- If we have sexual problems, how will resolve them?
- Do we have any habits that annoy one another?
- What lasting qualities about each other do we like?
