E.T. Comes To Life
A couple of months ago, my friend Danny turned me on to this new VH1 show called Totally Obsessed. One episode featured a guy, Nick Gjoka, who liked to recreate his favorite scenes from the movie E.T. Headed into what I like to call “The Halloween Season,” this gave me an excellent idea. I would build an E.T. and be Elliot from from the movie.
I started with a garbage bag, some packing bubbles, newspaper, duck tape and tempera paint. I stuffed the garbage bag full of packing bubbles and used the duck tape to shape E.T.’s head. As the head form got closer to what I envisioned, I had the bright idea that I would just use the rest of the roll of duck tape to coat the garbage bag, instead of using paper mache. So much for that idea. The tempera paint didn’t stick to the duck tape. Oh well. Heidi came over to help and we put on a coat of paper mache and then let it dry over night. The following morning I painted E.T.’s entire head brown. As soon as that dried I was able to paint his facial features. He didn’t turn out too bad, if I do say so myself.
To add a few extra touches, I made a finger that lit up, using a mini-mag-light and I had the E.T. theme song repeating over and over on a small radio. The radio was hidden in E.T.’s basket, which was attached to the BMX bike I bought at yard sale in Maine a few weeks ago. (Ok, give me a break, I am unemployed.)
