My Speeding Ticket
This evening I drove to Cornwall, NY to dispute a speeding ticket. Contrary to what my mom may think, I do not normally speed. In fact, I still question whether or not I was actually going the speed stated by the officer.
This all happened a month or two ago, when Heidi and I were coming home from Drum Corps/charity event in Kingston, NY. I was passing a car on the interstate. Another car pulled up behind me and bright-lighted me so I sped up to pass the car on my right and let the car behind me pass. Then the blue lights came on. I pulled into the other lane, thinking the cop needed by, but he signaled for me to pull over. I was crushed. You’d thought someone ran over my dog or something. My mom never got a speeding ticket until she was almost 60 and I prided myself on achieving the same.
Anyway, everyone at the courthouse was very nice. I was all ready to give my whole story about being unemployed and on my way home from the charity event, but it was not necessary. Since I’d never had a ticket, they reduced it to a parking on pavement ticket, which meant a simple fine and no points on my license. I am satisfied, I guess. However, I found it a little strange that you negotiate with the officer outside the courtroom before you go in front of the judge. Then the officer does all the talking and the judge asks if you agree. Is this really how it is supposed to work?

Sheila, if you read this, it does not change our agreement. You are to maintain a clean driving record.
