God and Country

Since my mom joined us, I had to schedule the vacation around my hometown’s 4th of July “God and Country Celebration.” That meant we had to be back in East Bend Friday night for the Saturday before the 4th of July festivities. I realize that many people might consider this a fate worse than death, but I actually enjoyed it. This the one time of year when everyone comes together to hang out and watch the parade. I hadn’t been in 9-10 years. In an almost movie-like moment, as soon as I started walking to the parade I heard a [very slow, southern] voice say, “Sam Gomez! It has beeEEeeen a long time!”
I can’t tell you how many people I saw from my childhood and adolescent years. I even ran into 10-12 folks from my high school graduating class. This, of course, was a big reminder that I am supposed to be scheduling the Forbush High School Class of 1995 10th year reunion. Details coming soon.
On the drive home, I took the Blue Ridge Parkway fora few hours. I’d wanted to do this for a long time. We stopped for a few minutes at Maybry Mill.
