More of the Good Old Days

Friday night reminded me of when I first graduated from college and I went out about every night. On an average week night, I’d stop by to see 2-3 friends at various events and parties. (Again, this was before the days of Business School.) Weekends would get so hectic that I couldn’t even make an appearance at all the parties. (I know, you really feel sorry for me.) I loved those days! I enjoyed meeting my friends’s friends and I especially enjoyed to see where they liked to hang out.

Friday night, I had 4 parties to stop by. Heidi came straight from work, so we could make it to the first by 6 PM. Dan Doughty had a party to celebrate his last day at Elektra. (Yes, they are still laying off Elektra folks at Atlantic.) He was very excited - as well he should be - he was just casted in the lead role in a politicalish play written in iambic pentameter. He’ll perform on the LES in just a few weeks.

Then we went down to ACME Underground to see one of my former intern’s, Marissa Levy, perform. She’s a sweet little firecracker and sharp as a tack. I went out to see her a few weeks ago in New Jersey. She’s really got a great set of pipes. I hope she’ll continue to develop them and not just stop playing music one day like I did.

Since we were right around the corner, we also stopped by to see another old friend Rebecca Ross. I met Rebecca back at NYU, where we lived on the same floor my Freshman year. She was also really in to the Internet, so every time we’d run in to each other, we’d talk shop. She’s since gotten a Masters degree from Yale and is now headed to London to get her PHD.

By this point, Heidi was beginning to wear. Granted, she’d just completed her first week back at school with the kids. I am sure none of my old teachers could have even hung out that late after dealing with me all week. I thought if I got some food in her system, she might be able to hang a little longer. Unfortunately, not even a world-famous Cozy Burger could give her more energy. I gave her my keys and headed on to the next place. Generally, I would have probably just headed home, but she needed the rest and I really wanted to see my friend Nicole since it was her birthday.

Nicole Rivera, one of my few friends without a website, had her birthday party downtown. While I was there, I saw Eric Choi - another guy from NYU’s music business program - so I started off with my regular rant about the poor state of the business. Then Nicole introduced us to a couple more of her friends. This is where things began to get a little weird. Her friends were very nice. In fact, they even listened to my entire dream about going to the Olympics, which can get a little long, if I have an audience. Anyway, we talked about traveling for a bite (again, a subject that I can sometimes go overboard with) and then somehow I think I may have joined their band. I asked them about auditions, but they seemed rather confident that my interview had gone well. Interview??? Ummm, ok. Anyway, they were very nice. I just found it amusing how the guitar came back in my life with a bang. We’ll see what happens.

As I was leaving Nicole’s party, Danny gave me a call on cell. After a little arm-twisitng, I decided to go meet him for a minute before I headed home. Now I’ve know Danny for several years now. Given the time of night of this phone call, I thought it would be in my best interest if he saw my face when I told him that I was going home to get some rest. We had plans to go to NJ and hang out all day Saturday. (Otherwise, Danny’s been known to pull this neat little trick where he falls off the face of the Earth when it is time to leave.) So, I went uptown and hung out for a half hour or so before I went home for the night.

About Sam Gomez

This is my lil' workshop on the web. I created it to let my friends and family know what's going on with me. It quickly became a place for me to rant about my feelings and publicly humiliate myself - not that I needed yet another medium. Generally, I just share whatever is on my mind (stories, photos, etc.) Read the full about me.
