The 4th Amendment
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
I am very disturbed with what’s been going on in NYC and London over the past few weeks. On Saturday, I went down to the WTC site with guests from out of town. Admittedly (and shamefully,) I’ve been so self-absorbed lately that the events in London hadn’t really hit home. That was until I visited the WTC site and remembered how much chaos there was that day. There is a timeline posted by the site. Apparently the President addressed the nation twice that day. I have no recollection of this. It was difficult to stomach how all those innocent individuals were no longer with us and how much our daily lives have changed.
While we were at the Statue of Liberty earlier in the day, someone had mistakenly left a diaper bag in front of the Statue. The NYPD had to clear the entire area - for a diaper bag! Of course, it ended up being nothing more than a diaper bag. I guess Jr. was going to SOL on the way home. Then later in the evening on Saturday I read that the guy the London Police killed was totally innocent. I can’t believe we live this way. Again, I’m already afraid of the police.
This morning the NYPD was searching bags at the Steinway subway entrance. I’m totally innocent and it made me nervous. There has to be a better way to deal with this. I guess I live in fairyland when I think there’s a way to make our world a safer place without things like the Patriot Act.
