Elektra vs. Motown
The rumors have been circulating since Sylvia left Elektra in March, but it now seems more than just a rumor: Kedar Massenburg has quit and now come this September, Sylvia Rhone will become the chairman of the Universal/Motown group, replacing Mel Lewinter who is scheduled to retire. So, at what point will the labels start hiring people again, instead of laying them off?

Sam, if you read my profile, you will see that I want to get into the music business and do publicity for a major label. I just started working for a local Chicago artist, Phil Circle, and I’m doing more than just publicity, which is fine, I am grateful for the experience. During his gigs, he wants me to go around and give flyers to everyone and see if they want to buy a CD. For some reason, this makes me very uncomfortable. I’ve always been very nervous in these types of situations. I’m fine in professional networking or working with the media.
If you are a music publicist, do you often have to go up to people you don’t know and start conversation? I don’t mean networking with other professionals or media, but going to people at a show and passing out flyers to them or selling CDs?
I know you may not know this because you are in new media, but I saw on your resume that you did some PR work. Any advice would be much appreciated.
